200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805

A crucial moment in Britain's struggle against Napoleon, the Battle of Trafalgar effectively ended any hope that Napoleon may have had for an invasion of the British Isles, and confirmed Britain's hegemony on the high seas. The success of Admiral Nelson's 27 ships against the 33-strong combined Spanish and French fleet off Cape Trafalgar was one of the most significant naval victories in British history. HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship, remains the oldest naval ship still in commission, preserved in memory of the battle and the Admiral who lost his life on board in the hour of victory.
