The Royal Navy typically manoeuvred in 3 squadrons, and each was given its own ensign (red, white and blue). The 'Yellow Ensign' never actually existed as there was never a Yellow squadron, but was a nickname associated with those who had been promoted to Admiral through length of service rather than naval ability (and hence were 'in charge of the beach').
